Spring

Tuesday May 12, 2020 Today during my walk I was reminded of what David said in Psalms 102:25-28 “Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens [are] the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou [art] the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.”

It is the “wax old like a garment” that got me to thinking, like it has before. I grew up trimming trees with my dad. As a teenager and in my early twenties I worked in the woods in Main as well as Oregon. In the mid 90’s I begin to notice that trees break easier than they used to. In much more recent history walking around the woods here in MO I have noticed that there is much more dead in the woods then there was when I used to work in them. When I drive through the prairie states most of the trees you see are half dead. This is especially noticeable in the western NE and western KS. We use more and more water to irrigate the fields; are the trees not getting enough water? The insect population is also increasing and this helping our trees to die. Look out across the hills of CO or MT sometime, the forests are dying. We are genetically modifying our seeds so our crops can grow. Yes, the earth is truly waxing old, , soon God will change it as we would change a garment.

Two trees that caught my attention this morning. The first one is an Ash it may have been struck by lighting the second is a Maple that is not healthy for whatever reason. Lack of water? Lack of nutrition in the soil? Insects? Maybe all three. It was nice to see the signs of spring. Flowers are in bloom, leaves are returning to the trees, etc.

It was also nice to see the cattle and horses enjoying the fields. The cattle are always curious, or maybe they think I’m coming to feed them? Whatever it was they kept me company as I walked down the road, at least as far as the end of their field. On the way back they did the same.
